Nestled in the heart of Toronto’s biome of art and music is the Bovine Sex Club. Despite the name, this club doesn’t serve its namesake but rather some of the city’s best plated punk in all its DIY glory. On any night, you can find a string of artists gathered for a smoke by its unassuming entrance devoid of name in place of an eccentric collage of bicycles. Yet on the tail end of Pride 2024 this venue housed a celebration featuring one of Toronto’s punchiest underground acts; Feura.

With their fiery four-piece backing band, the show began with a steady crescendo. Jamming on a thrashing, bassy rhythm, we get a taste of what's to come. Once the instrumental peak was met, Feura soars to the stage to join their band. Her energy was akin to a firecracker, the small stage is barely able to contain such a force. The tiny venue is transformed through mere illusion, into an arena with a stunning fusion of punk and a modern derivative of classic rock. The chemistry between the band and their singer is undeniably tight as Feura messed with each of them through the night, as though egging them on to riff off his own boundless energy.
Their stage presence is unapologetically queer. In a refreshing protest of the commodification of this subculture and its inherent queerness, Feura stomps out any sense of plastic inauthenticity with a stage persona so sincere that you’d think you were met with a 70s punk-rocker. Even with the constraints of space, the set summoned multiple opportunities to mosh, which the singer also joined in on. All of this build led up to a Feura staple to round out the show, a crowdsurf.

Like any punk show, the audience is just as involved with the performance as the artist and Feura truly fosters an environment for their audience to let loose. A ticket to any of his shows are an immersive concert experience that epitomizes the underground music scene in all its rage, fun, and community.
