On a rainy Thursday evening in Los Angeles, mxmtoon turned the Wiltern into a cozy, emotional space for her Liminal Space tour. The damp night air created an atmosphere that perfectly matched her moving performance. As the lights dimmed and the music started, mxmtoon’s voice came out like a warm, honest whisper. She began the set with the soft and subtle album opener “dramatic escape” before playfully urging the audience to bring more energy. Then suddenly, her band erupted into full force as she launched into the lively country-pop anthem, “i hate Texas”.

Mxmtoon's delicate vocals were perfectly complemented by the rich sonic tapestry created by the smooth blending of guitars, bass, and soft percussions. This was apparent when she performed “rain”, the centerpiece from her new album. She sounded really great. Her vocals stand out as both vulnerable and assured, as she navigated lyrics that explored transitional and introspective themes. Every song felt personal and reflected the liminal states that we all go through, just like a well-written diary entry. She connected with her fans in between songs, and at one point, she opened up about coming out as queer in 2017, which inspired her song “feelings are fatal”. The track conveys a sense of isolation and the internal conflict of suppressing one’s identity.

Towards the end of the show, she lightened the mood by acknowledging her tendency to write sad tunes. With a playful grin, she assured the audience that she also had upbeat tracks in her catalog. She then led the band into the lively “mona lisa” and closed the show with “dance (end of the world)”, getting the crowd moving and lost in the moment.
