New Jersey-based queer indie artist and drag king Saint Valentine released their single
“Transjester” at the beginning of this month, the title track to their upcoming debut EP. The song tells the story of a king who wishes they had been born a court jester. It touches upon themes of revolution and freedom of speech, as well as acts as a metaphor for queer identity, notably being transgender.
The king character feels like his life (and death) is filled with humiliation and only serves
“a family crest”, whereas jesters die with a smile, representing the protest of their greatest belief and purpose: to entertain, but also to speak their mind and act as social commentators. The king may hold more power on the surface, but when he meets his end, it is far less meaningful than the people who joined a revolution and fought for their causes.

This narrative of wanting to pursue one’s true self rather than remaining confined by the path of generations before them stands as a parallel between the king/jester story and trans journeys. Saint Valentine says that he would choose to be truthful to himself and risk making someone uncomfortable, like a jester, over staying silent and living by other peoples’
expectations, like a king. One of the most impactful lines that stands out is the end of the chorus: “A fallen angel knows the life of fallen royalty”. This seemingly puts the idea of shame as a result of living insincerely into perspective.
Not only are the lyrics impactful, but the composition and sound of “Transjester” play
their own part in creating an overall wistful, hummable tune. Saint Valentine’s vocals are smooth but bittersweet, and a simple acoustic guitar, tambourine and bass-driven strings guide the listener into imagining the fantasy world that’s been painted.
The song was created in collaboration with Shane Furst, who co-composed and
engineered it, Luca Yannuzzi, who provided backing vocals, percussion and also aided in the
writing process and Instagram user Internet Frankie, who brought the strings to life.
Saint Valentine identifies as genderfluid and transgender, and they incorporate a unique,
eccentric drag style into every performance. Much of their look takes inspiration from David
Bowie’s fashion and makeup, and often depicts the character of a medieval yet whimsical jester. “Transjester” is a deeply personal and creative story, and the rest of Saint Valentine’s debut EP is sure to cast light on even more of their unique artistry.
